PMA Nepal and Magnus Consulting Group hosted an interaction event with Mr. Zhou and Ms. Li from China on August 23, 2024 in Kathmandu. On the occasion, Mr. Zhou presented the evolution of the project management profession in China, starting with the Lubuge Hydropower Project in 1984. Key milestones such as the establishment of a certification system in 1987, Tsinghua University’s affiliation with IPMA, and the Ministry of Construction’s promotion of project management in 1991 were explained. The introduction of IMPM and PMP certifications around 2000, along with industry-wide adoption (especially by Huawei), had further propelled its growth. Today, the profession of project management has become crucial for strategic goals and innovation, though challenges persist. PMRC-IPMA China has boosted education, PMI China has a large membership, and the China Software Industry Association represents numerous companies and professionals. Their company, Winner Soft, has been contributing towards the implementation of software standards.

The importance of international collaboration was emphasized, with exchange of PMA Nepal activities and the IPMA AsiaNet initiative. Upcoming IPMA World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa in November is anticipated to highlight key opportunities for further dialogue and cooperation among the member associations. The interaction event concluded with best wishes extended to Mr. Zhou and Ms. Li for their journey to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. A reaffirmation of commitment to extend collaboration and cooperation between Nepali and Chinese project management professionals was a significant step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations and advancing project management practices globally.
