About the Expert: Dr. Louis Klein

Senior strategic advisor, systems leadership, governance & transformation


Educated as an economist and social scientist, Dr. Klein has dedicated his career to integrating systems theory and cybernetics into organizational and societal transformation.​

As the Dean and Research Director of the European School of Governance (EUSG) in Berlin, he leads initiatives that bridge theoretical research with practical applications in governance and systemic change. His work emphasizes the importance of understanding social complexity to effectively navigate and implement change within organizations and broader societal structures.

​Dr. Klein’s serves as Secretary General of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR), where he manages a network of over 25 member organizations representing more than 30,000 systems scientists and practitioners globally. His leadership roles also include positions as a director at the World Organisation of Systems and Cybernetics (WOSC) and as Vice President of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS). ​

In 2010, Dr. Klein was awarded the research prize by the International Center for Complex Project Management, Australia for his contribution on the governance of complexity, exploring how systemic approaches can address intricate challenges in both organizational and societal contexts. His work advocates for adaptive, resilient governance structures capable of responding to the dynamic nature of global challenges, such as the Anthropocene and the polycrisis.

Beyond his organizational roles, Dr. Klein contributes to the academic community as a co-founder of the Systemic Change Journal and as a member of the editorial boards of the Project Management Journal (PMJ) and Systems Research and Behavioral Science (SRBS).

In the last five years. Dr. Klein profoundly contributed to the transformation of the Moroccan education system leading a socio-systemic complexity evaluation of a process of societal metamorphosis.

Dr. Klein’s extensive experience in consulting and research has positioned him as a thought leader in the fields of systems leadership, governance, and change.
